How long do you wear clothes for before you wash them?
-
Which clothes really need ironing?
-
Run your washing machine at the rated load specified in the manual.
-
Experiment with different washing powders to see if you can wash some types of load at lower temperatures.
-
Tumble dryers are real energy monsters – only use them as a last resort! Make the effort to use the clothes line or rack.
-
Turn the iron off before you iron the last shirt – there’ll be enough heat left to iron it for free.

No Cost Actions.
- De-frost it before it gets too bad.
- Ensure heat can circulate around the back
- Set it to the highest safe temperature (XC)
- Don’t cram it too full – if the air can’t circulate it won’t work
properly.
- If you have the option, keep it in a cool place.
- If you’re regularly running it nearly empty, place
blown up plastic bags in it
- To save the cold air all spilling out each time the door is opened.
- Don’t keep the door open longer than you need to.
- Allow food to cool before putting it in the fridge.
Small Cost Actions
- When it needs replacing, buy one with a high energy rating.
- Don’t buy a fridge that is larger than you need

- Salads rather than cooked veg saves energy.
- Use the microwave whenever you can
- Put the lid on the saucepan
- Many dishes don’t need to be boiled – noodles, pasta, rice will almost or
completely cook just by having boiling water poured over them
- When you use the oven or grill, it costs no more to cook a full load than
to cook just one item of food -
- cook in bulk and then freeze it for later
- Use the leftovers – it saves cooking new food and saves money
- Using an oven on a cold day heats the house – on warm days this “free”
heat is wasted.

Immediate actions - no cost
- Turn lights off when you leave a room – are you really going to be back
soon?
- Use local “work” lights for activities that need bright light – don’t
heat the rest of the room
Small changes – medium cost
- Increase the brightness of lights by getting rid of lampshades that shade
too much of the light
- Painting your room a brighter colour will make the room brighter!
- Is the room brighter than you would like? – fit a lower power bulb.

Immediate actions - no cost - Have a shower instead of a bath.
- How much time do you spend in the shower – could you reduce this by say 10%?
- If you do have a bath, share the water with a friend.
- When you have a bath – no more than 4”
- Run the dishwasher or washing machine at full load…and run them on economy settings.
- If your tank isn’t spray insulated with foam, fit a jacket to it.
- Reduce the temperature of stored water to the minimum that is safe (XXC)
Small changes - medium cost - Fit a low flow shower head that traps air to make it feel like a more powerful one.
- Could you live without your power shower?
