Immediate actions - no cost

  • Did you reset the timeclock when the clocks changed?
  • Turn the heating off 30 minutes earlier – it will probably stay warm enough for free!
  • Adjust the TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves) to give the right temperature for each room – some can be lower than others.
  • Try turning the heating down a little at a time until somebody complains.
  • If you have a gas fire, turn off the central heating and use this instead when you’re in that room.
  • Avoid using electric heaters if you can – gas heaters are a third of the cost to run and emit 60% less carbon for the same heat.
  • Is your airing cupboard warmer than it needs to be – try lagging some of the pipes.
  •  Lag any pipes that run through areas that don’t need heating.
Small changes - medium cost
  • Consider a programmable room thermostat which gives different temperatures at different times of day.
  • Saves you manually turning it up and down all the time.

  • If you haven’t already got them, fit TRVs to set exactly the right temperature for each room.
